Newbies are everywhere, as are bloggers. Today blogging is gaining so much fun and flavour that everyone is motivated to start a blog. Blogging is good. It is so nice to share your thoughts, your perspectives, opinion, advice to people, solution to their problem and so on.
When one starts a blog, there are so many stuff that startles the person. Some worry with the technical aspects. For those who are experts in the technical side, there may be other issues like writing articles, keeping up to the schedule, getting traffic, advertising, getting a good design, so on and so forth.
Before getting drowned in the heap of blogging issues, I point out a few things that every newbie blogger should take care of. The points I give are partly on the setting-things-up process and the rest are developing stuff. This is an exclusive list (from my own experience) for newbies who want to promote their newly launched blog.
Find the Right Platform
This is where your blog is parked. So choose it wisely. I would not point out *one* perfect host for you since every blog is unique, so is its purpose.
If you blog for hobby or just want to share your everyday experiences, picture etc. just for fun you can choose a range of free blogging platforms like WordPress, Blogger, Movable Type, Serendipity etc..
Don’t get me wrong, these are excellent platforms for free. However there is a chance that they make take back their service, may increase the price or even delete your blog for some reason (I’ve had it!)! You wouldn’t want to wake up one day and be shocked to find your blog nowhere!
If you want to run a small business blog and if you are willing to pay for hosting, just go for a self-hosted WordPress blog right at the beginning. I did this mistake of choosing Blogger at the beginning (no regrets on the hosting though). It is hard when you switch things over to your own domain (this is the url of your site for which you pay for) and hosting, you lose traffic, startle your audience and so on.
You also need to spend a lot of time on design and other stuff when you have already established your blog and are half way through. It is always good to set these things right at the beginning.
For those who want to run a serious business blog and want to make their living on it (eventually) I strongly recommend buying domain and hosting at the start.
Submit blog to search engines
This you need to do once you set up your blog and have made few posts on it. If you don’t do this your blog will be indexed by the search engines but this may take ages. Submitting your blog to search engines means you wave the big flag to those spiders and invent them to crawl on your site.
If you do this and are updating your blog regularly and if your blog has enough content, then your blog will be indexed by search engines in minutes. For a list of search engines follow my post on submitting blog to search engines where you have a handy list.
Submit blogs to blog directories
There are certain blog directories to which you can submit your blogs. Some are more like communities cum directories. Technorati, Blogcatalog, MyBlogLog (this is closing soon, thanks for pointing it out Marcus!) are a few worthy to start with. You may also need to create a good profile of yourself with a consistent name in all the communities/directories so that you create your own brand for yourself and the blog eventually.
UPDATE: Shame on me that I forgot the wonderful blogging communities I am addicted to and am myself one of the top users. My friend Marcus from Marcus-Baker.com kindly pointed out these sites. I *highly* recommend every newbie blogger to join the following blogging communities and actively participate. Your flight will really take off smoothly and swiftly.
Burn your blog feed at Feedburner
Feedburner not only deals with your feeds but also provides excellent statistics, for the level it is free. There are a few excellent perks too. Just burn your blogs feed to feedburner to get more subscriptions to your blog.
Add feeds to Twitter and Facebook
Once you have burned your blog’s feed add your feeds to your Twitter or Facebook account. With Facebook you can automatically add you blog (or its feed) so that every time you make a post it is shared with on your profile. With Twitter you can either tweet your posts manually (I won’t recommend that) or Twitterfeed is a service which does this automatically for you.
Make subscription to blog feeds easy
The ‘Subscribe To’ link and the chicklet (the button) should be easily accessible and visible in your blog. It makes it easier for your blog’s visitors to subscribe to your blog’s feeds. Also make the subscription procedure as easy as possible. Too many captcha codes or multiple questions/maths will normally irritate people.
Forget about adsense (for now)
Ya that’s natural for a blogger to register an Adsense account and visit it every 30 minutes to see the updates in Adsense earnings. Don’t do this at the beginning while your blog is new, for two reasons:
1 You become obsessed with money making and will not focus on writing and
2 Your earnings at the beginning will discourage you since you would not have gained much traffic at this earlier stage.
Start reading about search engine optimization
This is the right time to start reading. You should get to know about SEO strategies and techniques, right at the beginning. Don’t think that it is a geeky thing! It is not.
You will need to implement them soon after starting the blog or atleast a while after. So develop knowloedge on SEO.
Focus on content
Content is king is the popular saying. While you are interested in promoting your blog through all other options available, people won’t be interested in reading your blog, if your content is not valuable. So write valuable and useful content in your blog.
More importantly, give to readers what you promise. If your blog is about freelance coaching then don’t post comics in the blog. Also stick to a posting frequency.
Socialize
Online business relies mostly on socializing. Get more friends. Join social sites like Twitter, Facebook, Friendfeed, LinkedIn and so on. Don’t immediately start sharing your blog url or a blog post after joining. Build your profile and connect to good friends.
Establish yourself first and then start sharing valuable content from your blog. Having said that do not become addicted to these social sites, you need to write your blog! This is a word of caution.
Leave comments on other blogs in your niche
Link to other blogs in your niche and most preferrably a blog of similar size. You will be easily noticed this way. Don’t just say “nice post” or “great stuff”. Add value to their blog by leaving contexual and useful comment.
Don’t spam their blog by leaving links to your blog (you don’t need to actually, since comment forms ask for your link by default), but if your comment is valuable you will be automatically noticed both by the author and the audience of the blog.
Promote your blog online and offline
The actual promotion process. After all, it is your blog and you need to do it manually apart from all those applications and pluggins that do it for you. Include a link to your blog in your email signature.
Print your blog’s url in your visiting card. Give your blog’s link to your friends and ask them to spread it over. There are various ways to promote by word of mouth.

I was wondering, regarding SEO, if anyone has experience with the SEOPressor tool for Wordpress? You can find it at http://seopressor.com. I am considering it, but as it is a considerable investment, I’d like to hear others experience with it. Thanks!
/Thomas
Thomas Kristensen recently posted..Store is now open!
Hi Thomas,
I am not using SEOpressor here at Find All Answers. But I have used it on other sites when submitting guest posts. SEOpressor is good for SEO; it helps you to optimize your post for ONE keyword.
You basically have a checklist like, whether you have the main keyword (which you should enter on a box for individual post edit pages) on the first line, in h2, h3 tags, in the last line etc. and it also displays the keyword density. Based on the output of this checklist, SEOpressor gives a score to every blog post so that you can aim at improving the score.
Honestly, I was not that impressed. But you (and others) may have different opinions.
Cheers,
Jane.

Great thoughts regarding Adsense. I remember years ago starting my first blogs, and plastering Adsense all over the place. Those blogs were a mess! As soon as I stopped obsessing over earnings, ad placement, etc…Is when the blog magic really started to occur.

Christian,
LOL! You are not alone. Almost every newbie blogger starts a new blog like that; with numerous adsense banners; and as you say, when that obsession gets over, that is the exact time when the blogger starts experiencing blogging success.
Cheers,
Jane.

I think guest posting is one of the most effective way to promote the blog at its first few months. Guest postings will give our blogs more exposure as well as increase our credibility as a blogger.

Great list,
Never forget the importance of quality content.
Then interacting with the blogosphere is also very important. Like reading and commenting on other blogs, socialising. But be genuine and effective.
A comment like, “Nice post”. I suppose it means nice post, but come on be a little more interactive. Those kinds of comments make it see like you’re just interested in backlinks and not really commenting.
Robert Bravery recently posted..5 SEO Tactics That Will Not Work
Hi Robert,
Thanks for stopping by. I agree with your point on comments, especially when it comes to newbies. Since most newbies don’t realize the power and the full benefits of blog commenting, they have an urge to simply build backlinks and gain exposure by leaving a “nice post”.
Thanks for pointing that out.

Jane.
I think its complete guide for a newbie blogger, from chosing host to a last step.
Hosting is very necessary because we need our online business to be online for 24 hours.
search engines, feed burner and all that stuff is also important.

Great tips for nay new blogger. You may not know this but MyBlogLog is closing up shop in May.
There are also a lot of other niche type blog communities that have sprung up since you wrote this post. Sites like Blokube, Blog Engage and Blog Interact which are all good for getting exposure too as well as for meeting and networking other bloggers.

Jane, aloha. Terrific resource for newbies. Thx for taking the time to put it together. As it happens, someone asked me just the other day for tips on getting started with their blogs. Now I can link them to this post. Perfect.
Since I know we are in agreements on comments, I won’t dwell on that except to say YES! YES! YES! COMMENT!COMMENT! COMMENT! Aside from the benefits of meeting other bloggers and their readers, I believe that thoroughly reading the post so that you can leave meaningful comments, makes a person a better blogger.
One additional way for people to promote their blogs is by including a hyperlink in the signature block of their e-mails. Whether they use only the hyperlink or use a service that allows them to pull the last post, that lets people know about your blog. And, if the last post has an intriguing title there is a good chance the e-mail reader will click on it. Also, we know that many e-mails are forwarded thus others may well be introduced to the blog through the hyperlink in the signature block.
Well done, Jane. Best wishes for a terrific day. Aloha. Janet

It’s funny…love your comment about Adsense…I recently saw a study that said that 70% of searches are organic in nature, not ad focused.
Interesting…
And yes, I agree, that when we focus on the $$$$ we lose a little bit of ourselves in our writing.
I’ll never forget when one of my readers sent me a note to share that she was noticing a difference in my writing…and it was because I was focusing on “selling” and “marketing” rather than just sharing my story and from my heart.

Hi Jane,
Info-packed as usual! I’ve never been a fan of captcha codes; such a bother. Also, the look of Adsense on a site is typically disappointing. For affiliate sites I have no problem placing those ads but I won’t place them on my main site.
I agree that free hosting platforms are great for the hobbyist. If / when they’re ready to earn revenue and take the project seriously, it’s time to pay for hosting.

I did most of the thing you share here, but I still keep adsense. Haha
For the moment, ya, but in the coming future when I put better monetize ways on blog, I might consider remove Adsense.
*Indeed, I heard many bad review about Adsense, one of the thing is it’s not targeted enough, to add value to our content; and also drive visitors away to many weird site - like sign up now.. for selling products or sign up to get visitors’ email.

This is a great article, I have made many mistakes and after reading this have implemented the suggestions and with your tips have set better goals. thanks
I always think people should go self hosted Wordpress if they have any intention to be a business blog or try to make earnings from it. I was however surprised that BlogSpot lets you put javascript/AdSense/Amazon Affiliate….etc inside your blog which Wordpress.com free site does not allow, this means the free Blogspot has huge advantages for a free cloud hosting that can let you try to monetize, but you still run the risks of getting it shut down/cancelled…etc
There are advantages too though like stability from a cloud platform and free, so it’s a tough decision. Just know that if you decide to move your blog later you lose all your SEO/PageRank and everything you worked hard to build up so even if you can import content you lose a lot, so you probably should put lots of thought into what you want from your blog in 2, 5 years when making the decision and don’t think short term.
BTW, your CommentLuv is set to disable extra links unless user registers for your site. This is a default of latest version, but not sure if you want it set this way on purpose or not.
Justin Germino recently posted..Movie Review: Black Death (2010)
Justin,
Exactly, when I build a blog on blogger, do all the hard work, build links and popularity and then when I move it to wordpress, I have to do it all again. How pathetic and a waste of time and energy?
And you are right about Blogger having more functionalities and benefits than Wordpress; certainly at least with putting ad banners, as many newbie quickies wish that
Thanks Justin for the heads up; after I installed the new version of Commentluv I didn’t touch the settings. I have changed it now.
Cheers,
Jane.
I left a slew of comments today on other blogs and every blogger who upgraded to latest CommentLuv had same issue where they forgot to allow non-subscribers to have full commentluv links.
Email Andy Bailey and let him know you also would like the default to allow vs require subscription, he wants feedback and if gets enough people telling him they prefer it to default to allow instead of restrict he will change default.

All you tell in your article is really usefull but i want to ask one thing that every time whenever we write a new post ping is also important factor for indexing pages in search engines.I am also a newbie
Hi Jane,
Excellent writing… I think it is very much helpful for a newbie to start blogging and promote it. They can also use different forums and social book marking like digg, stumbleupon etc for promotion. But the real fact is, they need to work hard with patience because it is impossible to gain success over night and they need to learn a lot about blogging, seo, coding etc and need to be careful doing mistakes.
Those are really some great tips for a newbie blogger, infact it is a whole what to do guide for someone setting up a new blog. I at first thought you missed out guest posting as a way of promoting a new blog but then I thought that it will be really hard for a newbie blogger to start guest posting because he/she is completely new and may not know much things about writing a guest post. Well if it is a new blog of a seasoned blogger then I think guest blogging can also for promotion of the new blog.

As a new blogger one should also learn about the plugins what are they and actually why are they? After getting know how of plugins and addons find the plugins which are made for the sole purpose of the plugin and make you SEO tasks easy like All-in-One SEO pack. Similarly after sometime new bloggers should also try to learn CSS it is not much difficult and becomes very handy when you want to make changes in the theme of your blog.
I have two blogs in self hosted wordpress, but when it came to start a new one recently, I chose blogger. I could have easily just purchased a domain and started a blog with my current host with self hosted wordpress (my host offers unlimited domain hosting with my hosting package). But I did not do that because blogger has a lot of advantages over wordpress too.
